It is the old barns and cultivated fields of SW Ontario that often ignite Christine’s interest in and passion for the stark beauty of local landscapes. She explores a theme common to the rural experience-the relationship between people and the earth’s harvest.
For Christine, the simplicity of line, shape and colour will always trump detail. Initially it is these elements that draw her eye to a given landscape. Her pursuit of these elements results in the creation of peaceful, monolithic statements that testify to the incredible beauty of the environment. Leaving behind the messy details of life, Christine chooses to focus on what is essential. Mood often results from the choice of a warm or cool colour palette, or the direction of a shape or line. Lack of texture helps focus the eye on the relationships between each delineated piece of the landscape puzzle.
She credits influences from a variety of artists in the creation of her distinct style. Often compared to the works of Indigenous artist Norval Morriseau and Ted Harrison, she can also say that her use of colour is inspired from Canadian artist Gordon Harrison and Dutch neo impressionist Vincent Van Gogh. The simple shapes found in the works of American artist Paul Norwood have influenced how she breaks down the scenery in the photos she takes of potential landscape paintings.
After studying Art History at Queens University, she spent her career years teaching a variety of subjects including Visual Art, in Waterloo County. She continues to participate in workshops and lessons in both the acrylic and watercolour mediums. Currently her work appears in several galleries and boutique shops. During the summer she can be found at Stratford’s Art in the Park. Her work is in private collections across Canada, the US, and UK.
