Collection: Sonya Satveit

Sonya Satveit is a Uxbridge based fibre artist.  Satveit's love of quilts started when she was 10 years old. It began with a heavy, hand-tied patchwork quilt made by a friend’s grandmother out of old clothes and scraps.

In 1999, pregnant and planning a move to Nunavut, she decided it was the perfect time for her to learn how to quilt so bought a basic model sewing machine, after taking a class and Satveit was hooked, Satveit has been creating and designing traditional quilts ever since.

Sonya’s evolution into art quilting began after she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Quilting became a refuge during her treatment and she began experimenting with improv quilting, quickly falling for the free-spirited, intuitive approach.

What makes Sonya’s quilts unique is her choice to stretch them on canvas and leave them “unquilted” creating the effect of an abstract painting and adding an element of surprise to her art. As a self-described optimist, her quilts are colorful, cheerful and playful – a reminder to not take life too seriously.
