"Shroud" explores the complex emotions surrounding the loss of a former self, particularly the tension between grief and a sense of burgeoning hope. The cool blues evoke a sense of isolation and melancholic longing, representing the part of us that clings to the past. Juxtaposed against these blues are the bright spring greens, symbolizing the nascent growth and potential for transformation that emerges as we shed our old identities. The abstract nature of the painting reflects the fragmented state of identity that can follow a significant life change or trauma. The layers of paint create a sense of density and heaviness, mirroring the weight of letting go of who you once were. However, the interplay of light and dark within these layers suggests a struggle, but also a possibility of reconciliation and acceptance of the emerging self. This piece is not meant to portray a specific experience, but rather to acknowledge the universal human experience of mourning a former self. The shroud itself can be interpreted in multiple ways - a cloak of mourning for what has been lost, a veil obscuring the path forward as we redefine ourselves, or perhaps a protective covering as we navigate this vulnerable state. While "Shroud" acknowledges the darkness of loss, it also offers a glimmer of hope. The cool blues are balanced by the bright spring greens, suggesting that while there is sadness in letting go, there is also the possibility of growth and a renewed sense of self. This piece is an invitation to confront the emotions that arise when we shed past versions of ourselves, and to find strength and possibility in the journey of self-discovery." - Steph Law
