This mineral pigment adds a beautiful luminous quality when used in glazing applications, but don’t hesitate to use it full strength for unique monochrome works, or as the underpainting for a watercolour done traditionally.

Artist Notes: Applied in many thin layers an underpainting done in Vivianite adds enormous depth and luminosity to watercolours. Vivianite is granular and lifts easily so light applications in layers work best.

Paint Maker’s Notes: Vivianite has been used as a pigment since antiquity and is also known as Blue Ocher. This grey-blue mineral was christened 'Vivianite' after Welshman John Henry Vivian discovered it in Cornwall, England. Vivianite is often found in peat bogs, where it grows on (and will eventually replace) the bones and teeth of animals (or humans) found within.
