Collection: Brian McFarlane

Brian McFarlane is known as Canada's foremost hockey historian, a man who has been a player, a writer and a broadcaster of the game for over fifty years.

For 26 years he served as a host and commentator on Hockey Night in Canada. Before that, he became the first Canadian to work on U.S hockey telecasts when he was employed by CBS in 1960 and did most of his interviews on skates. In the seventies, he worked on the NBC telecasts when he introduced Peter Puck to the telecasts.  He has written over 90 books on hockey and in 1995 he was inducted into the media section of the Hockey Hall of Fame. McFarlane is also a member of the order of Canada inducted in 2020.

McFarlane rediscovered his love for painting in his retirement and has not stopped painting since.

If his own childhood had unfolded differently, McFarlane would likely have had a brush in his hand his whole life. As a teen in Ottawa, he took painting lessons from well-known artist Henri Masson, but when one of those sessions caused him to miss a football practice he was left with a decision “The coach mocked me. ‘Where were you yesterday, McFarlane? We don’t want any painters on this team.’ So I gave it up for 50 years".

McFarlane now combines his love of painting and hockey in his paintings.  Not ready to slow down he jokes that his painting and writing keeps him young.
